Fall is such a fun time of year, the cooler weather, football and the approaching holidays definitely are exciting! If you aren’t careful you look at the calendar, and realize suddenly it is January. Where did the time go? I really, really want to savor this sweet spot of time known as Fall. The Fall season is short-lived here in Texas so I have to take advantage of any Fall weather we may get. The few weeks before all the holiday craze begins and thought what better way to do that than embracing all the best Fall has to offer. Today I am sharing some old and some new easy Fall family traditions that the entire family will enjoy!
CREATE FUN & FESTIVE TREATS
We hit the neighbor jackpot! She not only is a great neighbor who keeps an eye on us and our house, but she loves to bake us treats. Even more, she loves Maddox. Throughout the year, she has him over to teach him how to create her homemade treats. It is time they both cherish. This time around, they created mini candy turkeys and classic haystacks. Spend a day getting creative with the kids and food in the kitchen. Seeing the joy in their eyes as they create their masterpiece is priceless. Need some inspiration to create your Fall treats? I have created a Pinterest board just for you!
MAKE HOMEMADE POTPOURRI
I distinctly remember when I was young the first Fall morning, you know the first dewy crisp morning my mom would happily proclaim to no one in particular that Fall is in the air. For me, Fall in the air is the smell of a simmering homemade potpourri on the stove. Stovetop potpourri is super easy and quick to put together; you most likely already have these natural ingredients in your kitchen. My Fall stovetop potpourri combines apples, oranges, fresh cinnamon sticks, cloves, and rosemary sprigs. Throw ingredients in a large pot, cover with water and simmer. You will have sweet smells of apple and cinnamon wafting throughout the house. Just the smell makes you want to cozy up on the sofa and light a fire.

VISIT A PUMPKIN PATCH & PUMPKIN CONTEST
Pumpkins are a must in the Fall. This year I kept our Fall decor a little less traditional, but there is no shortage of pumpkins around the house. We are starting our first annual pumpkin painting contest this year, making a big to-do of it. Unfortunately, the days of Maddox wanting to visit the pumpkin patch are over; we opt for the grocery store or the local farmers market to select our pumpkins. If you are still in the early years with your babies, take advantage and visit a local pumpkin patch to find your pumpkins. Next for our painting contest, we spend way too much time perfecting and painting pumpkins. Painting is so fun for Maddox and something he has done since he was little. Once night falls and candles are lit, we have friends come over to place their votes for their favorite, and the winner takes all. Whether you decide to paint, go the traditional route and carve the classic jack o’ lantern or stock up on carving kits, unleash your inner kid, up the ante and make a fun beat. No doubt, memories will be made.

HOST A FOOTBALL WATCH PARTY
Fall = FOOTBALL!! We (not so) patiently countdown to Labor Day and the kickoff off SEC football. We recently finished our backyard remodel so this area has quickly become our go-to for hosting Saturday get-togethers with all of our friends. Fall is the perfect time to gather and cheer on your favorite team, ROLL TIDE. For all things football, check out the ultimate football-themed party we hosted for Nick’s birthday.
START A THANKFUL BOWL
I often find myself telling Maddox what a great life he has. Because we live a blessed life and I think it is vital for me to teach him, this life isn’t guaranteed. That we, as parents, have made many sacrifices and worked extremely hard to give him this life. I even need to remind myself on days that life is good, not just good it is great. So, this year, I want to start a thankful bowl. Beginning in October, I put blank cards and a bowl on the kitchen counter. The goal is to write down at least once a week something we are thankful, every person in the house does this. Then on Thanksgiving, once our bellies are stuffed, we will gather around the fire and read them aloud.
