Not sure if you are one to pay attention to Groundhog’s Day, but on February 2, I tune in and cross my fingers praying ole Punxsutawney Phil cannot find his dang shadow. Legend has it; if he cannot, we are in for an early spring. Phil indeed didn’t see his shadow this year, so now he needs to hold up his end of the deal and bring forth spring! I digress entirely, as I anxiously await the sunny, warm days of spring, I thought why wait? When March arrives so should your spring décor! Last week the Essentials for Spring guide was released on the blog and today, I have given you five easy steps on how to incorporate spring into your home décor.
As I mentioned recently, our patios are an extension of our homes, and we should put the same level of design detail there as well. We spend a lot of time visualizing what we want the feel and look of the inside of our home to be, and that too should be consistent to the outside entryway, patio, etc. You can apply every step given today to both the inside as well as the outside of your home. I plan to share my patio in great detail soon but for now here are a couple of snaps!
Step 1: Declutter
If you haven’t gotten in on the Tidying Up with Mari Kondo frenzy, then now is your time. Spring is a great time to get out of the hibernation mode and clean out the clutter. I am not only referring to closets but décor items that are just past their time. You know, the deflated throw pillows that have zero life left to give? If you haven’t used it in the past year, chances are you are never going to. Don’t forget about the patio, get rid of all the items we shove back there over the winter. It is time for a pressure wash, remove last year’s plants, and to clean the outside windows. A couple of weeks ago I spent time cleaning our barstools. They look brand new, hallelujah!

Step 2: Fresh Scents
When I think of Spring undoubtedly the first image that pops into my head is flowers. The easiest way to add a fresh scent to your home is fresh flowers. I LOVE LOVE LOVE fresh flowers in the house! And while l have them in our home from time to time, unless they are fresh from the garden, it can become an expensive décor piece. Because of this, I like to add in the appearance of freshness in alternative ways. Enter faux flowers; in today’s market; there are great faux flowers options. Now how do we get that fresh scent, by adding in a diffuser, scented room spray or candles will ensure your room feels fresh and screams spring.

Step 3: Greenery
Is there anything more fantastic than vibrant overflowing planters on a patio? Having lush greenery on your patio can transport you, making it feel you are in another world. Now if you have a green thumb like me, this isn’t a hard project. Go to your local nursery or Amazon (I mean what don’t they have), stock up on plants and bam in one afternoon everything is planted and will live for eternity. But what if that green thumb is missing? Insert faux greenery, plants, and trees into your empty corners and for table decor both inside and outside. Get creative with your greenery. Add texture by inserting the tree into a basket, adding succulents into a wooden tray for a table display. Over the last few years, planters have reached the NEXT level. Choose planters that add uniqueness and enhance your space.
We enjoy having fresh herbs in the house; it becomes a little project for Maddox. He used to go to a farming class, so he is basically an expert. Maddox likes to select the pots, pick his herbs, then plants and cares for them all season long. It is great for him to learn where our food comes, and how hard work it is to farm your own garden. I haven’t started this project but we are so excited to get it done.

Step 4: Pops of Color
Over the past year, I have changed out most of the furniture in our main living space — trading in color for a beautiful white, textured palette. I love how our sofa and chaise lounges allow the accessories to stand out and make a bold statement. Spring is a great time to refresh your décor and add color to your area. You know I love color. I had to keep my oversized piece of art in the room; this is my statement piece! Adding a lightweight throw blanket and rug will bring texture and warmth to any room. Trade out your heavy winter throws for something more playful and light. Next, layer in fun throw pillows and colorful trinkets to brighten a space immediately. I chose black this season; it is a color ya know! Our new living space feels refreshing and exciting, just like spring!
I love incorporating bright colors in the kitchen. We use tons of fruits and veggies during warmer months so instead of buying decor, I use what we already have in the house — creating simple decor by placing fresh fruits (oranges, lemons, and apples) and vegetables (artichokes, carrots, and tomatoes) into individual bowls or towers and by layering on top of a natural wood board or tray. I promise your diet will thank you too! If your household doesn’t go through vegs and fruits fast, buying fresh might not be an option. Faux fruits and vegs have stepped up their game and are so realistic. If going the artificial route, I recommend buying two separate brands of the same items. This tricks the eye, so it sees variations of the same fruit making them more lifelike.

Step 5: Evaluate and Make Adjustments
Step 5 is the most critical step of them all. Your space is styled fit for a magazine. Now step back and evaluate. Does the room look overdone, is it lacking in a particular spot or does it need more pizazz? The best way for me to do this is by snapping a few pics. A picture easily allows me to see what’s not aligned if something needs to be adjusted or looks off. Make the minor adjustments, and it is official, spring is sprung! I love seeing what each of you take from the blog and incorporate it into your home. Please share how you are incorporating spring into your home décor!
