Where do we spend all of our time? Right here in this bright and colorful family room! This is the coziest and most playful spot in our house. I wanted to share a little update, what I like to call a summer refresh. Want to know how to add color to your space? I’ve added that too. Sources are linked below!
Creating a fun space for your family doesn’t have to be expensive or chinchy. When adding color to your area make sure you mix in natural wood tones, solids colors, lots of texture, and patterns. I have a great post here about mixing prints. That blog post is mainly about styling pillows but you can still use these tips as a general guideline for the rest of your space as well.
I used a grey washed table, round coffee table and styled it with a dough bowl. The dough bowl I actually found at At Home. With the help of my mom, I styled the bowl with vibrant succulents and a balanced yet eclectic look.
I am sure you have seen these books around. I highly recommend them for two reasons. One, they’re so beautiful to style with and two, they are GREAT reads!
This sofa was custom made but I have found a few similar ones that are gorg!
This is our homeschool area and where I work when I need to be next to Maddox during school time. Chairs found at Homegoods.
Reach your HUE potential:
Your room should start with neutrals that will ground the space. The leather chair, navy sofa (yes navy can be neutral), & white walls gave me a great base to start. After deciding the primary function for this room, I then chose a predominant color and focused on that. I knew I wanted a bold wall, and that I wanted it to be jewel toned. After spending time studying paint swatches, I selected a color that had undertones that work well with blues and greens. I offset this BM color (Bavarian Forest) by using black and white patterns mixed with the same jewel-tone pillow. Defining your color pallet and pulling those colors through your home is what gives you the polished, cohesive appearance, which provides me with another blog post idea; I will start brainstorming!
Notes:
- The predominant color should be used in your room in at least three different areas so that the look is intentional and to keep the eye moving. You can achieve this by using the color in your pillows, art, furniture, and accessories.
- Pick a color and use it in a controlled way. You don’t need to be excessive with this color; a little goes a long way.
- If you have a fear of color, keep walls and furniture neutral then accent with color in subtle ways through pieces that are easy to remove from the space. In my living room, I change the color palette every season. Keeping my furniture neutral allows me to do this efficiently. Adding the color in by using accessories and pillows makes this a simple and affordable change.
