How to Decorate Your Christmas Garland

how to use garland like a pro

Now that all of our Christmas trees are dazzling, it is time to add a little greenery into our winter wonderland.  Garland is one of my favorite pieces to add into Christmas décor.  It takes the least amount of time and can completely transform any setting.  Today I am sharing how to decorate your Christmas garland.

Choosing the Perfect Garland

So many types of garland (pine, flocked, olive, eucalyptus, etc.).How do you choose just one?!  One major misconception about garland is for it to be stunning it has to be expensive; that is NOT true!  Shopping early for garland is a great way to save, many stores have sales early in the season. Or do the exact opposite and buy your garland after Christmas. Quantities will be limited but the savings won’t! Always measure the space you are placing the garland before shopping, so you know what you need once you find the right fit.  Garland is a great way to add in amazing textures and complimenting hues to your Christmas tree, see how I used garland in last year’s home tour and here in 2016. The same is true for your garland.  It does not have to be uniform to your other décor, but you want to make sure the overall look is cohesive.

Assembling

We all know garland can be extra thin (especially if it is budget friendly), to create a lush feel twist two or even three pieces of garland together (don’t forget to FLUFF).

FAVORITE GARLANDS

Next, attach your garland to its surface (mantel, stairs, mirrors) make sure it is nice and secure.  If you are looking for a more minimal feel, this could be your stopping point.  If you want your finished product to be more over the top, now is the time to add in the details.  Start with ribbon/beaded garland (learn what ribbon you should use and how to place in the Christmas Tree Edit) picks, objects and ornaments.  Add sparkle, textures, and create dimension. On my staircase, I secured the garland using pipe cleaners so I didn’t have to worry about any damage!

Details Make a Statment-Mantel

Now that our garland is in place, we need to accessorize it like a pro!  A mantel is a focal point in the home, and as for our mantel, I used one 9′ piece.  If you have a TV over your mantle make sure your sensor is left unobstructed (make sure the husband can get his football in). You know, I love making our mantel standout apart from the other living room décor. To secure the garland I wrapped a wire around three nails; one the ends and one in the middle. You could also use Command hooks if you don’t want to damage your wood.  I swagged the garland so that I had some movement across the mantle and I love the way it turned out! I decided to flank the garland on the ends with more significant items to attract the eye.  Top off with coordinating stocking holders and luxurious stockings and light the fire!

Make a Showstopping Entrance-Staircase

Y’all are well aware by now that almost every room in our house has at least a few Christmas décor items (I can’t help myself).  Personally, having decorations flow from one room to the next makes for an inviting and cozy feel.  Creating a showstopping entrance sets the tone for the rest of the house, so go big or go home.  We have a spiral staircase, and it lends itself perfectly for garland.  To make the area complete I fill in space with cozy, wintery items (lanterns, baskets with warm blankets, birch fire logs, mini trees!! etc.).

Mirrors-Getting Creative

I was looking to get creative with my floor mirror and got inspired by this jeweled garland I found at Michael’s (life changing)! Using my doubled strand garland, I secured it to the walls using nails and then added the jeweled garland, ball garland, and teardrop ornaments!  I simply draped these across the greenery in staggering lengths. The jewels draping in and out give a luxurious and opulent feel, yet so inexpensive!
