Friday Favorites: Christmas Traditions

christmas traditions

During Christmas, we tend to be extra busy and can easily get caught up in the hustle and bustle of the season, but there is nothing more important to me than spending time with my family. And, absolutely nothing more I look forward to every year than our family’s Christmas traditions.  Today, I want to give you a peek into our home during the holidays and share our family’s traditions that are so near and dear to my heart.

Our Oldest Tradition:

Our oldest family tradition started when Maddox was just a tiny tot, and I got the idea to turn a Christmas themed picture into a portrait canvas to hang on the wall.  Then the next year we added another one, then another one, so on and so on. As of now, we have 8 canvases displayed. Next year I will print my favorite 2018 picture to add to this gallery.  A huge THANK YOU to Mpix for sending 2017 & 2018 canvases this year!  Not only are they high quality but they are super light making them a breeze to hang. My heart swells every time I walk by and beg for time to slow down!

Maddox’s Tree:

It is no secret that our living room Christmas trees (3!) aren’t exactly a child’s dream tree.  Christmas spirit runs deep in our family and that definitely includes Maddox. It was important for me to make sure Maddox had a tree all of his own. Maddox gets full reign and completes this project all to his liking. Little did I know how much he would come to love “his” tree.  As soon as trick or treating is over, he begs for the Christmas décor to come out.  November 1st the first Christmas decorations are pulled out of storage and Maddox’s room is first on the list, Nick and I help with assembling the tree, but after that, he takes over adding all the ornaments and objects.  This year Maddox requested that I add a large bow and ribbon to his tree. We took a trip to Michaels where he selected the ribbon and new picks. As I installed the ribbon I taught Maddox my tips and tricks so he can learn as we go. To learn how I place my ribbon check out this post! Maybe I have a future designer on my hands; it warms this Mommas heart to see him take an interest in what I do!

Yearly Ornament:

Each year Maddox adds a new and personalized ornament to his tree.  He either creates one or we pick out a unique, personalized ornament during the year to add to his tree.  This year’s ornament came from Dollywood. This year while visiting Nick’s TN family we stayed at the Dream Moore hotel.  We were able to personalize the ornament once we got home to Texas. There’s no doubt we will relive these precious memories from our trip as Maddox hangs this ornament on his tree year after year. These are a few of my favorties!

Spreading Holiday Cheer:

We have been in our house for three years now.  As we celebrated our first Christmas here we wanted to do something nice for our neighbors to spread a little Christmas cheer!  What better way to spread cheer than cookies and packaging to go with it?  Now I am no Betty Crocker but give me some premade dough, and I become a cookie cutting genius!  We blast holiday music and gather in the kitchen to bake and decorate until we are all covered in icing.  Then we wrap and deliver to our neighbors!

The Story of Jesus:

This year we plan to start a new tradition on Christmas day, to read the story of Jesus’ birth.  Our faith is a vital part of our everyday life, and we want to create a family tradition, that is solely focused on the reason we celebrate Christmas.

The Cajun Tradition:

I come from a massive Cajun family; it’s crazy but it is so fun. As you may (or may not) know I’m not big on cooking but that all changes on Christmas day.  I cook a huge Cajun Feast (gumbo, etouffee, jambalaya, etc) for our family to come over.  A few years ago we started inviting friends whose families weren’t near and since our Christmas evening has turned into quite the Christmas Cajun celebration.

There you have it, the Robert’s Family Christmas traditions.  I hope this inspires you to create traditions with your family. Or maybe it will inspire you to add a couple new traditions this year; it’s never too late! As I look back throughout the years, I never remember a certain gift I got, but cherish every memory each of these traditions created! Cheers to creating a lifetime full of memories!
