As you may have learned not so long ago, navy is my favorite color and the signature color of MRI. Years ago, I couldn’t get my mind away from the idea of owning a navy blue sofa. I shopped for several months hoping to find something else to fall in love with since I was intimidated by the fact of owning a blue couch. I quickly learned that my fear wasn’t going away but neither was my admiration for a navy couch. Here is what I learned and why I am so glad I took the plunge and purchased a navy sofa.
What changed my mind?
Months and months (and months) of shopping but nothing jumped out at me unless I accidentally scrolled by a navy sofa. Finally, I decided to give up and give in. I was going for this “bold” sofa that wasn’t a common piece and one that would stand out in the crowd. I am normally okay with this feeling but something about a navy sofa really frightened me. Why would I want a sofa that has such a powerful color and would tie me to one color palette? This was something I couldn’t quite get over. Until I spent a couple hours on the internet searching for inspiration. Finally, it hit me…
Navy is a neutral color
Navy as a neutral
Did you know you can consider navy to be neutral? Like your favorite pair of blue jeans, navy can be used to mix and match colors from all hues to create a classic or dramatic setting. Commonly gray. White and black are thought of as neutrals.
While this isn’t wrong; the list is definitely limited. Let me put your mind at ease. Navy pairs well with vibrant colors, spices up black and white tones, and plays nicely with other neutrals. In the fall I love pairing navy with modern beige tones, such as tan and taupe.
Another favorite combo is navy accented with rich tan leather, hello sexy!
Why Custom?
At this time, I was living in a different home that had a rather odd arrangement. A corner fireplace can make for a difficult design when it comes to furniture layout. I knew that I wanted a sofa that would truly fit the room and not just “work” in the space.
I searched high and low for a sofa that would be proportionate in the room, but nothing was quite right. At this time my Aunt (oh how I miss her!) encouraged me to have a sofa custom-made. She was a true design genius and I will always cherish this couch in memory of her.
I saw many couches I loved, but the sizing wasn’t quite right. I ended up choosing a chenille material and had the navy blue sofa designed with a right-facing chaise lounge. The sofa is approximately 110” long and extra deep at 48”. Talk about the perfect napping sofa!

Don’t Be Afraid
While I definitely understand how fear can set in when you’re considering a new sofa for your home, I want to encourage you to make purchases that are unique and true to your style. While yes, navy is a unique color option when it comes to sofas, it is also a fabulous choice and one that you should consider. You can make the room bold and colorful or let the navy sofa set the tone while it accentuates the neutral colors you pair with it.
If you feel like navy is too contemporary or maybe goes a little too glam, be sure to pair it with several natural elements and you will get just the look you are going for! Imagine your navy sofa in front of a wall that displays beautiful wood-work!
Here are a few of my favorite pieces of navy blue furniture and accents that would be fun and exciting for you to integrate into your home. When you do, send me pics on IG, FB, or Pin.
Now get to shopping and find the navy blue sofa that sings to you!
