But like many things interior design, selecting the right artwork is easier said than done. There is so much to consider before you even purchase art – size, design, cost, to name a few. Not to mention the actual process of hanging the art once you get it home – how high, is this too close or not far enough? The selection of wall art and its placement does not have to be tricky. I am sharing my favorite bold pieces of wall art and simple “rules” for wall art placement in your home.
Selecting Wall Art
Wall art can instantly become that missing piece that makes any room feel complete. But when it comes down to selecting the perfect piece of wall art, well, it is like someone telling you to decide between fries and ice cream for the rest of your life. You can’t just pick one! Yes, you need to select artwork that you love; this is especially true if it is in the main living space and one you will see every day all day – so choose wisely.
Here are a few things to consider before buying your wall art. Make sure your selection reflects your personal style. But how? Start by selecting the type of art you are searching for, such as photography, abstract, tapestries, etc. You want a piece that is bold and makes a statement, but I do consider any existing artwork décor. It doesn’t have to be matchy-matchy. I prefer it not to be. The pieces should bring an overall cohesive look to the room. Before you start your search, measure your space, and determine what size art you are looking for. Are you looking for an oversized piece or instead option for 2-3 smaller pieces? Tools for Hanging
Hanging pictures and artwork can be taxing for any relationship. Someone thinks higher, and the other thinks lower! A few years ago, I found the picture hanging tool, and it is so easy to use! I don’t even have to consult Nick for help! Now, for a few tips…the fewer nails, the better. If you can get away with using only one nail to hang your picture, then go for it, it is easier to ensure your artwork is level. I prefer to hang art with drywall hooks when a stud isn’t involved. But if you have the picture hanging tool, you don’t need this advice.
Spacing & Placing Wall Art
When choosing the size of artwork for your space, ensure that the artwork will fill ¾ the width of the furniture it will hangover. If you use artwork that is too small, it will not feel balanced and will be underwhelming.

Shop Affordable Art
When hanging artwork above furniture, aim to position it approximately 6″-8″ above the furniture. When hanging artwork too high, it feels disconnected from the furniture and looks as though it’s floating. Also, be sure to hang large pieces of art approx. 3-5 inches apart from one another, this will make them feel connected and not leave unnecessary blank space between the two.

If you’re hanging artwork on an empty wall, hang it approximately 56″-60″ from the floor to the center of your artwork. It should be eye level for an average height woman. On taller walls, I hang them around 65″ or so.

PRO TIP: If you’re working with multiple frames to create a gallery wall (click that link to learn how!), position each frame approximately 2-4″ apart. Keeping them close together will help the eye to see the art as one unit.
