If you tuned into last week’s blog, you know MRI was in final preparation for a live on-air design segment with Houston Life!!! Spoiler alert: I made it out alive and now couldn’t be any prouder. Now I am sharing 5 easy steps to achieve a minimalist design style in your home. When creating with minimalism in mind, it is important to remember that less is more. Minimalism is a timeless visual concept and one that is becoming more popular than ever before. Follow along to learn 5 easy and simple steps to create a polished, minimalist design for any space.
DECLUTTER
I spoke in depth about the necessity of decluttering any space in Incorporating Spring into your home décor blog. Decluttering is crucial if you are trying to achieve a minimalist design. Our houses can become so cluttered over time, and it can add unwanted stress. Just look at your junk drawer, you know you have one. As the case with our junk drawer, the same can take place with our home décor creating visual clutter. Instead of letting décor items pile up simply remove them from the space. Pictures are a great example. Pictures are personable and have meaning and a piece you want to showcase, yet excessive frames can become visual clutter. Consider creating a gallery wall utilizing modern frames (shop these exact frames) creating clean lines.

FOCUS ON FUNCTION
When you begin to declutter or redesign any space be sure to consider what the purpose of the room is. A couple of questions to ask yourself are: What will I use this room for? What is essential so that this room functions well? I recently did just that when designing my home office. When designing the room, I focused solely on function; every piece of furniture was selected based on the purpose it would serve.
The buffet’s sleek design is paired with minimal décor. Serving as a storage space, inside is filled with samples, tools, books, my work bag, etc., reducing visual clutter allowing me to have all the necessities at my fingertips.
SIMPLIFY THE COLOR SCHEME
When selecting colors for your minimalist design you want to keep it simple by simplifying your color scheme using 2 to 3 colors max. Black, white (most neutrals), green, and blue are the best color options for minimalist design.
I recently added new barstools to our kitchen. They have a sleek design with the neutral color scheme I am loving!
To incorporate color into your space, select unique yet straightforward home décor items such as plants, coffee table books, pillows or vases. To ensure your room isn’t left feeling crowded or over-designed choose to feature one or two architectural pieces or understated pieces of art. Art is a great way to add color while keeping the overall design understated and monochromatic.

LAYER TEXTURES
The key to a successful minimalist design is layering textures. Again, this doesn’t necessarily mean adding additional decor pieces to achieve the “layered” look. Instead, when selecting items consider what they bring to the space. Look for items with different textiles, simple millwork, or mixed metal finished objects. Keeping it clean and straightforward yet adding depth and creating visual interest to your room.
It is no secret I am slightly obsessed with this brass vase; you can literally find it in almost every picture of our living area. It is an impactful piece that adds great texture to any room. Defined by its simple shape and unique color tone make it the perfect addition into a minimalist design. This modern farmhouse definitely has minimal design elements all while incorporating many unique elements which makes the fireplace a focal point.
EDIT
The final step is always the most import, RIGHT? Once, everything is placed precisely how you imagined; now it is time for the EDIT. It is vital, with any design, to reassess your progress then make the necessary changes. Ask yourself, “Does everything serve a purpose?” If not, remove those items. And what are you left with a soothing space and one you can truly enjoy in its simplicity.

Minimalism can be difficult to achieve. It is easy to over think/decorate a space without seeing the beauty in simplicity. The times I have designed an area in our home with a minimalist feel in mind I am always surprised at the end result. Over time I have come to appreciate minimalism more than ever before. The spaces feel larger and a bit cozier. I am excited to keep the minimalist feel going! I have a few projects happening at the house and I can’t wait to show you all!
