Your master suite should directly reflect the mood you want for your relationship. When my husband and I retreat to the bedroom I want there to be a calming and romantic vibe; so while I am decorating our space I keep this in mind and let it guide me.
There are a few basic rules I like to follow when decorating my master. These help create a passionate, restful ambiance.
1. NO pictures of your kids or other family members.
Sexy, edgy pictures of each other are definitely allowed and encouraged. Something I have planned for our bedroom is a poster size picture of Nick and me. I want it to be sexy but not embarrassing for guests to see (maybe us kissing in the rain? Sounds HOT!) You could also mat and frame large prints to hang over each nightstand.
2. Clear the clutter
There shouldn’t be laundry waiting to be folded, kid’s toys lying around, to do lists lingering. Leave these things in another area; the bedroom is off limits!
3. Seating area / restful area
You need a place to sit back and enjoy a nice glass of wine and have good conversation. Don’t forget to add a settee like this one or a couple chairs with a side table!
4. Soft colors
Think relaxing, calming, and peaceful. What colors did you think of? Bold colors don’t come to mind! This is important when planning your space. By no means does your room have to be all white but don’t use bright yellow or green. Add in colors such as a light blue, grey, or blush. Bringing in lots of layers and textures really helps the aesthetic. Your room will not be boring but it will be serene! I personally love designing a room with dark, moody colors. I recently did a master bedroom with charcoal walls, ceiling, trim, and doors. We hung chandelier sconces and black, velvet drapes. Doesn’t that sound enchanting? I will get around to blogging it one day. I keep our bedroom neutral but add in subtle color through the year, depending on the season. These peonies are fabulous and SO cheap! I highly recommend them!!
5. Soft under foot
You need a rug, even on carpet. It adds another dimensional layer and really anchors the bed. King size beds need a 9×12 minimum. I love our rug!
6. Plush bedding
Most plush bedding comes in the form of a duvet cover. I often get requests from clients to NOT use a duvet. I get it! When I am shopping for comforters I try to make sure they’re nice and thick. If bedding isn’t thick it is always great to add layers. I have used a blanket, a quilt, a comforter, and a decorative duvet at the foot of our bed. I often throw a fur blanket at the foot as well.
7. Dramatic Lighting
I highly suggest hanging a chandelier. Unfortunately for us a fan is a must. While there are some decorative fans on the market I find that they often look cheesy and still don’t give the right vibe. If a fan is a must you still have options. Extra tall lamps can do the trick. I suggest using lamps at least 30″ high, drama! These lamps are SO gorgeous, check them out. A pendant light hanging over your nightstand is another fabulous option and seriously is phenomenal! You can check some out on THIS project I did this fall.
